I joined Bookcrossing after a big write up in the Weekend Australian in August 2003 - my name is Jawin there too - and that eventually led me here. I've been looking for places like these all my life. People here don't look askance at having a Mt TBR; they don't roll their eyes when I buy more books (or book cases); and they understand the excitement of sharing great stories.
I share my house with a cat and two Westies. Merlin the Monstercat is 14 years old and in his prime weighed in at over 8 kgs - he is definitely top of the pecking order. Xena, Princess Warrior, is 12 years old; Missy is 6 years old. Of course, they're both absolutely gorgeous.
My other on-line addiction is Scrabble - and I'm always ready to play!
A könyvtáramrólI read just about anything - except mushy or really macho stuff. Favourites are fantasy, historical fiction and mystery. I support Australian authors when I can.
My list is a work in progress. So far, I have done almost all of my professional library, all my Bookcrossing shelf, and Mt TBR. However, I still have a loooong way to go!
My catalogue does not necessarily reflect my reading tastes, though. I have registered lots of books through Bookcrossing, including things I have read and don't intend to keep, some personal collection books that I have allowed out on loan, and many things that were bought specifically to release and I have not read myself. These days, because of the risk of suffocation by collapsing book piles, I am only keeping things I need for work, or that I will read again, or that I enjoyed enough to recommend to others. Anything else is listed on Bookmooch or will eventually be Bookcrossed.
I have reviewed and ranked books acquired for my personal collection from 1 January 2007, and I intend to add in rankings and reviews for older books as time permits.
If a book is tagged Bookmooch and has not left the house, then it is available on request. I've also included rankings and reviews for Bookcrossed books that I have read as I've added them in. I just found your email - from so long ago. I put it in a safe place and almost lost it! I am so sorry I haven't replied! So, I will be writing a looong email soon. Just wanted to pop in to say hello. I was checking all my emails and comments tonight, and thought I hadn't caught up for a while (now THAT'S an understatement), and managed to find it! MaryAnne reminded me, when she said you had been put off The 19th Wife too. I don't want to waste precious reading time these days on books I won't enjoy, and I wasn't sure about that one to begin with.
How are you? I see you have been reading some interesting books as usual. I found a Peter Temple book BTW. I went to the UNSW book fair hoping to find some of his, and found a later one. I was still pleased as it looks good too - I think I may have to get that series new though.
I finally read some Rebus! I am looking forward to the rest of the series - you were so right with that. He has an ability to write so that you just can't put the book down. I stopped after the first two so I don't get overload - I don't want to spoil them by reading too many at once, and I want to keep them as a delight for later on.
I hope you are well - and autumn is enjoyable. I can't believe it is almost winter - I can't believe how quickly this year is going. At least my reading is going fast too!

But you know how we booksellers look at it? It's the gazillion copies of The Alchemist sold that allow us to carry the more interesting, obscure, off-the-beaten path titles that we do.

I thought of you today when I mooched a copy of The Uncommon Reader - though I won't truly celebrate until it is sent and I receive it. But I was very pleased to have snagged it as it is popular, and I was keen to get it - which usually means I miss out.
Are these latest additions of yours from your box from Gaslight? Looks like a good haul - and adds to our 'shared', numbers even more. :) I noticed all those Temple books and had to check him out; now he looks like another author I would like. That was a very good snag of yours - all those! I love getting lots from the series straight away; then there is an abundance of riches available - hehe.
Speaking of mooching: I have had some unbelievable good luck recently; I have been able to grab some very popular books. And if not from BookMooch, then I have found some really cheap in a local discount store (for about a third of the price normally charged ), or there is a book shelf at work where books are left and offered for a gold coin donation to help the hospital - and I have found books there too lately! Hence my numbers are increasing a lot - for not too much outlay. Brilliant! You have given a lot more than you have got.
So, that is my latest news, I hope you are well, and not working too hard. And it is a bit cooler for you now - it is just lovely here after the terrible heat. BTW I love the photo of the Monster...

OMG! It was 41C on the coast here yesterday!!!!!! It is a little better today - but still too humid.
I loved Bartimaeus - his persona and his footnotes are the genius of those books IMHO. Though I felt the quality of the writing overall, in the three books, was above average.
I am nearly finished my latest book - these are a very good series, and seem to improve with each book. I am then going to read Maisie Dobbs with my friend too. We seem to be concentrating on Crime at the moment!
Hope you get a chance to read lots this weekend. I'm sorry we couldn't have had a coffee or something (wine perhaps ) when you were here... never mind, another time maybe. I may be up your way in June for a conference...
I just have to mention I have had this incredible weekend with regards to snagging mooches I have wanted! They just kept happening; it has been truly amazing! One day - when I get them you can see them entered in my library. A couple are through 'angels' so won't show on my BM profile - but the others are there. I have never had this amount of luck - ever!!!

The heat has been horrendous - and it is back with a vengeance! Still, it is not as bad as some years, but it makes me very unwell. There is a nasty bug travelling around work, which I succumbed to, but hopefully has gone now. The heat doesn't help I think, and a hospital is one big bug-fest!!!
Ooh - goody! I hope you like the rest of Bartimaeus. I was so completely surprised by that series - pleasantly. Sometimes I think it is best not to have any preconceived idea at all about a book, and then they can surprise you; at least they shouldn't disappoint. In fact, I only got a tiny hint from this site that they were any good after I had owned them for a while - I just liked the covers, and thought the blurb was interesting!! :O
I have happily been reading these last few days, when I have been able - I needed some dark fantasy to lull me out of reality... I'm reading a book togehter with my friend in the states now, we are slowly working our way through this series, but I like it very much as it combines crime with ancient Japan - and I think it is very well done.
I've never read any Ruth Rendell, and I have to confess: I have all the Rebus but I have yet to start that series. It is one I want to ensure I read some of this year! I only really started reading crime or mystery genres last year - this site did that to Britta and me!! I always read general fiction, and lots of fantasy and science fiction, but never got into crime. Now I am madly catching up! I have to say, I like changing my genres now, and I am enjoying all these European crime writers. It is easier to decide when you have so much information so readily available. I still love my fantasy and science fiction though - which is nice. It is interesting to see how some people consider it such poor fare. It may be a bit like offal - you either like it or you don't!!!
I hope you are not having to work too hard; and Merlin and Xena are well. I miss his photo. I must get to bed as it is late and I have an interesting day at work tomorrow!

Sorry I hadn't replied before your next note - this week at work has been too, too busy! I was most amused at your happiness with successful weed growing! But I can imagine the delight in getting some rain - I was at the Gold Coast in 2007, and it was so dreadfully brown then. I used to live at Tweed Heads so I know just how dry it was!

I quite enjoyed The Demon Child trilogy - and the next one too, I have two more of her series on my shelves to read. I want to read the Trudi Canavan next for my dose of fantasy I think, or The Alchemyst. I am reading a lovely little paranormal series now - just what I needed with work being so intense.
I loved Bartimaeus - I think the first book was so unexpectedly good, IMO, that the other two suffered as a result; but I was still so eager to get to the finale; I was enthralled for the whole time. He has just written another book, I think I saw somewhere recently. I will be interested in your opinion of these.
Jenny has offered to give me her copy of Snow Flower and the Secret Fan - so very nice of her! It is never hard to find generosity here!! It is very good for one's soul - this book-connections. No matter how bad my day is I always seem to feel soothed by someone on this site!
Are you back at work yet? I can't believe it is almost a third of the way through January already! I am off to finish the last few pages of my latest, and then to decide what to read next. That is always a huge dilemma!!

Yes, a big coincidence :) OH goes back to UK every yr to pick up BALI Awards (Brtish Assoc of Landscape Industries) - must be a bit like the Aussie version you mentioned!
And yes, definitely a better place to do it that UK - where latest I heard it was minus 8! Brr!

Enjoying Dear Fatty but it's a bit Parson's Egg. Not fussed about the bits about Madonna nor the lists but some other bits are interesting / amusing. Great photos.
Have to move on to Two Caravans for a BG so will have to shelev Dawn for a few days (LOL!). Enjoying TC though, have only just started but looks well written.
I'm sorry you've had Int Mooches without feedback, don't know how people can do that - or even just the +1 without a word of thanks! Get that sometimes but rarely no posting at all. someone just confirmed a book 9 months later!! It had got stuck and wouldn't go on Forced delivery so I couldn't remove it for months.

You are such a good friend - what a nice care package!!! Such great books! I want to get The Uncommon Reader, especially after reading your review - I thought it would be like that. I tried to get a freebie through the publisher's site but I never get any of those, so I will be buying it at some time - I am trying to curtail my buying to only books I REALLY want, and that will be one for this year. I am sure your friend will be very happy.
I only have a few days left in my break now, so off to do some more nice things... you too.

Hubby puts plants in hotels, offices, palaces, airport etc etc.
We originally came here in 1984 but were back in UK for the 90's.
Took a look at your BM a/c but I see you don't send internationally :(
Don't worry, I wasn't after any of your titles, but doesn't 3 points make posting overseas worth while??
Have just started dear fatty by Dawn French, so far so good, looks like an easy read.

And thank you for your thoughts... I had wondered about that trilogy, and kept looking for your reviews - hehe! I am so pleased I have all of Trudi Canavan's books to look forward to now. I have two more Jennifer Fallon series to read too - still collecting the last. I like her books - they are not 'amazingly great' or probably books that aficionados would rave about, but they hold a uniqueness that I enjoy. I always want to read the next book straight away, which is not always the case with some series, and shows my interest.
So, here comes another year...they really do go quicker as you get older. HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
I'm looking forward to our continuing connection next year very much!

Well nice to make a new friend and I notice we are both on BC and Bookmooch too. You are a prolific reviewer too I see and will make some time to have a look at those. Even though that can be dangerous and will only add to the mountain of books that are slowly taking over my house LOL
Noticed you have recently added The Uncommon Reader and I have heard good things about that one. I have started 'The Hour I first Believed' by Wally Lamb today and it is going to be one of those all consuming reads for the next few days. I am presently on a short break from work and glad to have the time to immerse myself totally in this one.

I am waiting to get Sunday in the Garth Nix series before I start, as I hear there are big cliff-hangers at the end of the last few books, and I get very miffed if I then can't get my hands on the next... hee hee. It should be out soon; I like Garth Nix very much.
I have had a terrible 'flu this week, but can manage to read something light in the afternoon, until my eyes go cross-eyed again at night. I started the first Kate Atkinson, but my head won't do it justice, so I am considering what I may easily digest at the moment - I think I will go for a light paranormal thingie. I also don't want to ruin a good fantasy either, I can't concentrate very well.
Which McEwan are you talking about here - his latest For You? That is a shame, but I guess we can't like every book by an author; though there are some like that. Or, maybe we can't like every book as much as most they have written.
I hope you survived all that terrible past weather, it has been such extremes here, from day-to-day; which is why I have the 'flu!
I have been managing to read quite a bit lately; though not as much as you, I don't think. But there is nothing much happening so I have some time these days - can't believe how little of the year is left! I can't read as much as I used to when I was younger, my eyes seem to tire more, or my aging brain. :)

Very good to know these books are so good - I don't know when I should read them now; I was waiting for the third. Do you think there may be more than three? I may have to read one, at least, next. I am trying to intersperse some fantasy between everything else. and also Joe Abercrombie's; and Patrick Rothfuss!!!!!!!
How have you been - I am happily chugging along this month with more wonderful books. There are so many good books on my shelves waiting to be read that I am beside myself trying to decide what is next. It is a very nice way to be.

Black Books is one of my all-time favourite shows too - I think the ABC have repeated the whole lot three times now, and I have fervently watched again each time!!! And I find myself laughing BEFORE the punch line at times! How sad is that? Still, watching those shows again and again is still better than watching some shows first time. I am considering buying the DVDs.
Aren't all these connection on this site so nice? I laughed when I read ozpierre's comment, but I laughed even louder at yours, in response - because it strengthened my belief in having found like-minded souls! Hmmm...would have been very surprised if neither of you liked it - it should appeal to all book lovers I think, in a fashion.
I laughed at your image of being 'overcome' by piles of books too. Figuratively, I am! I am buying for my retirement - at least that is my present excuse. still, I feel I should have more control. I must point out that I keep eyeing off any book you have been adding lately that I don't! LOL!! How can you not snag books by such good authors though? I have made myself promise to read one of their books first before trying to acquire all the rest; and I am very happy when I find a good author who has only written two!

I just read your review of Wrath of a Mad God which I just read today all in one day im more than sure you have done that more than once! Im wondering if you noticed the bit in the book where Nakor notices something on one of the paintings he recognises in the Palace underneath an attenders painting and also when Pug notices a flag at the Sisters hideout with a design on that reminds them of something but neither can touch on it? Do you have any ideas funny the things that keep ou awake at night. I too loved the book xxx

Just a quick note to say 'hello' and to share with you that I got my hands on a copy of The Time We Have Taken today; and I am very excited. I didn't realise it had won this year's Miles Franklin award. (Very ignorant at times I am).

I am terrible - I hoard my books - rarely allow them to leave. You are so good... I can't do that.
I have two really good used book stores near me in Randwick, and due to our exchange rate (previously) being so high - I have gone mad buying from the Book Depository on-line. They have free (FREE!!!!!) shipping! Even now (with the drop) their books are at least $10 cheaper than here, some even more! Outrageous!
I enjoyed the first few books of the Obernewtyn Chronicles; I still have to read the last one - but hasn't she written a new one that follows? I will look out for the third one for you - actually I have been seeing some of her books in my used stores recently; they are not often on the shelves.
I love this site because, when I add my books - as soon as I get home with them, or from the post box, I also put date acquired and where bought or if mooched - and now I put date started and finished too: a true reading journal. I wish I had been able to do this years ago (before computers and sites like this, hehe- that would have made for interesting reading too.
Must get ready for work tomorrow - I am going to add you to my friend list as I want to keep in touch - hope that will be a good move for you too!

I am so glad I got a reply. I sympathise - I am so addicted to my computer I would be a bit (bit: huh - who am I kidding - a lot) devastated if it died.
I loved The Book Thief - got 5 stars from me too. Very good review (again) BTW - it summed it up very well. I have finished Case Histories - and it got 5 stars as well. I don't actually give a lot of books 5; those two really deserved them IMHO. I have snagged lots of her books now too! Which Isobelle Carmody book did you read - I am a fan of hers too. Guess I could just wait for the review. I like writing these reviews - seems to enhance my reading, and it is such a nice way to complete the experience. My comprehension has certainly improved
Too funny! The reason why I was so happy to find this site is I wanted to know how many books I had doubles for because "they keep changing the bloody covers" LOL! I was pleasantly chuffed to find that I didn't have a lot - sheer luck is why! They change it in the MIDDLE of a series all the time now - even the size. Ooh, that irks me so much! My pet peeve and my absolute hate!
Oh, please; let's keep in contact - I notice you have added the first Bartimaeus book - and I am just finishing that series now. I was surprised at how good these books are - nice unexpected pleasure.
*sigh* - I have to go check out Steven Carroll now... as if I need another good author. What am I saying - of course I do!!!

I just read your fabulous review of One Good Turn and popped by to offer my appreciation and kudos; in explanation I have just discovered Kate Atkinson (through a good friend) and I am always excited to see how highly rated, and well thought-of, are these books I have in my soon-to-be-read pile! I am looking forward to Case Histories which is in my queue after a few more. The second of the series, One Good Turn, just fell into my hands in a used book store - which made my day!
And then I noticed you are another Australian and we share a lot of books! Amazing how books link us! You have written a lot of reviews - which is great; I will spend some enjoyable time meandering through them. I have begun reviewing all the books I read now, and putting them here; it becomes a great reading journal and memory tool, especially for forgetful me!

I wanted you to know that if you enjoyed "Burning Man" by Philip Margolin then you will have to get "Gone, But Not Forgotten". It is my favorite and if you look on Philip's page it is his favorite too.
Try and get your hands on it. It just might end up one of your favorites.
Looks like we share some books. Like I said I have only started and not even close it putting down all the books that I have read. I could be here for years and years.
