RólamWell...I have always been a bookworm. I love to read and talk books. I will read almost anything, but really enjoy historical fiction/mysteries, fantasy, and thrillers. But anything can catch my attention and fancy. I also moderate a bookgroup on yahoo called bookworms_anonymous. Anyone interested is welcome to join. Its a real fun group of people!
A könyvtáramrólI recently moved and now have the library I have always wanted. Well...its not two stories high with a spiral staircase and ladders with custom bookshelves. But it is a room entirely filled with my books! The only problem is that my entire collection doesn't fit in one room! So the library is starting to creep out into other parts of the house. Right now it is in the middle of being organized...

I've heard A Dance with Dragons has been pushed to Spring 2009 now. So I have plenty of time to finish A Feast for Crows. Thought I was going to have to rush and finish by the end of September.

Take Care and Happy Reading!
Nichole
You're welcome. I'm intrigued by libraries that have a lot of diversity. I sympathize with the problem of space for books; mine have taken over a whole room and are now expanding outward. My carpentry skills are not all that great so all my bookshelves look a little sloppy; however the books themselves make up for it. You can always think of them as exceptionally thick wallpaper.

Catching up on LT correspondence, and wanted to wish you all the best for the holidays! My relatives all know what to expect from me as presents--books, of course.
Have you acquired/read the new McCullough book "Antony and Clepatra" yet? It's quite good, very literate and not particularly sentimental. I plan on reviewing it, but want to re-read it again first; part of my initial read was at the airport, which is not so good for a book that makes one think!
Otherwise still slogging through the Atkinson WWII series, and trying to get caught up with cataloging books. How about you?
Cheers!

I haven't got the Follett book yet but I am looking forward to it. I really enjoyed "Pillars of the Earth." Right now I am finishing Greenwald's book "A Tragic Legacy: How a Good vs. Evil Mentality Destroyed the Bush Presidency;" an interesting and well written although depressing read. I am also re-reading Dunnett's "Disorderly Knights" as a diversion.
I'm looking forward to Thanksgiving and a little bit of quiet time for more reading.
Cheers!

I saw you just added Penman's mystery. What do you think of it? I've read most of her older "thicker" historical fiction, but have not yet sampled her mysteries.

Right now I'm working on "American Gods" and am enjoying it. I used to never read fantasy/sci-fi until last summer when I read "The Chronicles of Narnia" and it got me really interested. Then I read "Terror" by Dan Simmons - loved it! - and discovered he's written a bunch of sci-fi/fantasy stuff. Recently I also read "Ender's Game" - now I'm really, incurably hooked. This has opened a whole new genre to me - dangerous! More reasons to grow my book collection.
May I never get into mysteries!
My physical library is divided between read and unread books. The already=reads are in my bedroom and guest room. The unreads are in my diningroom on 8 bookscases - not nearly enough room. It is as much of a library-space as I can reasonably expect to have until the kids are grown and gone.
Take it easy! - Linda

I've gone a bit nuts with the LT lately! In catologuing my books, I've now found more than a few which needed replacement--mostly due to depradations of various creatures (cats, birds and silverfish seem to be the cief culprits). In any case I just bought a new copy of Dunnett's Game of Kings, and am inspired to start the whole series over again. I think this is rather like Penelope waiting for Odysseus; I am never destined to finish!

Okay is that Stardust the same as the film with Claire Danes? I really want to see that.
I took care of my snarky commenter. I really don't have time for idiots anymore. They were just trying to get some kind of reaction. whenever someone leaves a provocative comment on a blog they always come back to see if you posted it. This person, whoever they are, lives in my city which is quite small. I told them I would agree to stop purchasing books when several criteria were met including Americans becoming independent of fossil fuels, not needing 5,000 sq. ft. houses for two people, every industry becoming ecofriendly, etc. I also pointed out that we had planted several thousand trees on our property up north over twenty years ago. They just thought they were cute. But they weren't. I used libraries extensively throughout my entire life until several years ago when I finally realized that our library here is really bad. I used to work in bookstores and found I was not alone in that opinion. That is when my library began to swell and then with the advent of Amazon well you can imagine. Now that Amazon has a feature of used books I can obtain twice as many for the same cost. I buy a huge portion of my books used, or recycled.
Well I shall have to check into Neil Gaiman. This is one of the great things about the internet and Library Thing in particular.
Cheers and thanks.

We have the worst library system I have ever been stuck with. The last novel I tried to get from them they had to purchase first. Then I purchased it anyway because I wanted to read it again. We have a brand new library bldg with nothing of interest in it. Okay I will get off my high horse now.
I do really think a book addiction is a lot better than drugs, and cheaper.

I like your library listing a lot; I have just started my listing and have rather a lot of books yet to enter. (I am delighted by the site and the opportunity to talk books!)
I am very fond of Dorothy Dunnett; I think she was a wonderful writer with a gift for complex characters and tales. Carey has a similar writing style, but lacks the close tie in to historical events that Dunnett provided. Dunnett recommended starting her Lymond series before the Niccolo series, I concur, with the caveat that "The Game of Kings" as an initial effort is less well developed than some of the later books in the series. But it provides very useful background to the principal character, and it does not lack entertainment value. As Dunnett's writing matured, the depth of her writing increased significantly, as did her research into the historical frameworks for her stories. The two reference books or Dunnett Companions are actually quite useful for providing additional details on her rich and varied source material and on the historial characters interwoven in the stories. This is particularly true for the second reference volume, to which Dunnett herself materially contributed. I found with the Niccolo series that I liked reading each book through, and then going back and looking up the references or untranslated quotes that I was unfamiliar with, and then re-reading in an iterative process. It speaks to the quality of her imagination and erudition that this was a pleasure and not a chore!
Personally, I think "King Hereafter" which draws on the historical Macbeth is her finest work, but it is a difficult and somewhat dark work, and I did not really appreciate its quality until after several re-reads. Thus I would not recommend starting with it!
I suspect that when (or if ever)I finish listing we will find more works held in common. And I very much appreciate any recommendations you may have for historical fiction or historical mysteries.

Oh hey guess what I have coming to me from PBS? Danse Macabre by LKH!! I can't wait.. I have heard it isn't as good as some of her previous.. but as we both know they have been on a serious decline anyway.. that doesn't make them any less addicting for me though LOL sometimes bad books are still good.. or at least I hope so..

Wow, were almost up to 200!! When I finish inputting all my books maybe we will get there..
Have you read Hitchhikers Guide yet? I see it on our "in common" list.. that would be a great one for a co-read.
I just finished visiting a site he inspired and co-founded called H2G2.com... You would love it, Nichole.. it is a encyclopedia completely written by members.. it's huge.. If you visit be prepared to stay for a while.. it is completely addictive..
Later girl.

I really hope you're enjoying The Book Thief. That is well on track to be the best book I've read in 2006. Much like The Shadow of the Wind was the best book I read in 2005. Though both these years have been truly excellent in terms of reading for me (and you, I think). I'm all up for a buddy read in a few weeks. Maybe we should do SKP? It might be a nice change of pace to do one that isn't fantasy this time around. And then we can tackle Lions of Al-Rassan for you ;-) Only if you want to, of course. And only if you can bring yourself to cross over that 50 page mark!

I am seeing several books on the list twice though, i wonder if that means I have accidently input them twice, or have duplicates and just didn't realize it or if you did one or the other on your list.. I am going to go check for duplicate books on my shelf..
Talk to ya later

Cool, I hadn't checked how many we had in common since the last batch I put in.. I need to go see what they are.. I found another box of fantasy and sci fi though and some historical fiction.. so something tells me those were the culprits.. And I made it onto your list finally!! Your 4th on mine.. I was starting to feel left out LOL
I still have a few pages of books I have written down that I have to put in and then I will be done with the TBR. My back is killing me from sitting in this chair inputting books all weekend, pretty much around the clock... My husband hates when I get a new obsession.. I told him he would be loving it if this were a cataloging site for DVD's.. I wonder if they have a similar one for movies.. that would be cool..

Are you putting in books you don't plan to read or keep, like PBS books or books you plan to donate or sell? I am debating the wisdom of doing so.. on the one hand it would be nice to have somewhere to look and see what I have and on the other, it might just muddle things up.. I am also debating on whether I should put in books I have read but no longer have, just to be able to review what I have read and maybe start writing reviews for them here..
Have a great weekend.

I came in the check out yours and Aarti's shelves.. This is the first time I have had a chance to do anything on here other than log books onto my shelf.. there are a lot of cool features.. I really like that you can look up a person and see what books you have in common.. I noticed most of mine and your common books are vampire.. mostly Jim Bitcher and Kelley Armstrong.. I was surprised to see some chick lit on Aarti's shelf, I didn't think she was into that stuff.. We had a couple of chick lit books in common..
Are you loading all your books, or just your TBR.. for now I am only loading TBR and PC and I have only gotten through my Vampire library and part of my chick lit library.. it's difficult work.. because most of them are on shelves... so I have been going and making a list of them and then listing them in here.. it will be better when I get to the boxes, I can just carry those in here and load them on.. That is when I ever get time..
You totally kick butt.. You have like over 1,400 listed already.. Always the overachiever.. LOL
Can't wait to see how many I have in my tbr.. it will be interesting.. I think it's around 1,500.. but we'll see maybe I will be surprised and it will be less. that'd be nice..
Have fun loading books.. I am SURE you have more LOL
