I was an exchange student in Hungary for a year in 2005 and fell in love with all things hungarian. Literature wise, I only had a chance to read Attila Jozsef's poetry which was translated into english.
Can anyone recommend anything that perhaps can be found in english? (My hungarian skills are fading and I may struggle reading a purely hungarian book).

I did like this book:

The Street of the Fishing Cat and I've seen it on Amazon.

I just looked that up and it looks very interesting. Thank you! I will add it to my collection :-)

Hi, I would recommend the following:
Antal Szerb: Utas és holdvilág
Dezso Kosztolanyi: Pacsirta (Skylark)
Géza Ottlik: Iskola a határon (it does exist in English translation, though out of print for a while)
Adam Bodor: The Euphrates at Babylon
Milán Füst: A feleségem története
I never read any Hungarian literature in English, so I can only hope you won't get disappointed because of the poor translations...

Although my hungarian is poor now, I know enough to realise that unfortunately, the beauty of the hungarian language is often lost when translated but I always bare this in mind.

Thank you for your suggestions! I cannot wait to go to back and visit Hungary this year :-)

The Door by Magda Szabó... sorry, touchstones just gave up on me. But it should be relatively easy to get ahold of, and I hear the translation is also good (though I read it in Hungarian myself). Consider yourself warned, though, this book is definitely not for the faint-hearted.

I can also recommend

Slave of the Huns by Geza Gardonyi
