... for the vote of confidence, freelunch. I finished Watchmen last night so there's no excuse now for not going back to The Hobbit and finishing that off. I feel my journey through the book is almost as arduous as Bilbo's to Smaug. I always feel if I did read a Picoult that Nineteen ...

I started re-reading The Hobbit last night and already I'm up to Chapter V Riddles In The Dark. I'll probably read some more of the book over the weekend. beatles1964

I recently re-read The Hobbit aloud to my kids and I found the prose very awkward (and I don't think I'm usually sensitive to that kind of thing.) I don't recall having the same problem when I read most of The Lord Of The Rings aloud many years ago, so there may be hope for it for you.

Well, everyone else can go ahead and start with The Fellowship of the Ring while I re-read The Hobbit. I'll play catch-up and start The Fellowship of the Ring as soon as I finish reading The Hobbit. beatles1964

... should watch it first? That way I can enjoy that, and then get totally blown away by the book... I wish I were enjoying The Hobbit more. It fills me with trepidation about how I'm going to manage the longer Tolkiens on the 1001 list.

... remember where I read all this information and could, consequently, be entirely wrong with my retelling of the story. The Hobbit is a true prequel to the Lord of the Rings trilogy. It was written after the trilogy, but due to printers decisions it was considered to be too large to print ...

There is, in fact a discussion thread for The Hobbit already, over on The Green Dragon. Click here to view. The problem here, as I see it, is that when we voted on the group read, we voted on the Lord of the Rings trilogy. So ...

... but I think at this point in the week we should stick with Fellowship of the Ring. Let's do 3 chapters a week. The Hobbit is such a quick read (relatively) that those who want to read it first can do it on their own and catch up with everyone else in a week or two. When they do ...

Ok, so I think beatles has made his point, and I agree with you. It wouldn't hurt anyone to start with The Hobbit and I think we wouldn't mind adding another book to our shelves if we don't have it. Anyways, that's wat I think.

I agree it's really good to read The Hobbit before The Lord of the Rings trilogy at least the first time you read the books. I did that, too, the only time I read the books. :)

Technically The Hobbit is not a prequel (at least in literature) because it was written before LotR, however it is true that you don't have to have read The Hobbit to understand LotR as discussed in #76.

That's also why the movie makers did the LOTR trilogy before considering making a new version of The Hobbit as a movie. It's a prequel.

I plan on starting with The Hobbit then The LOTR Trilogy. I don't see how it would be confusing to anyone to begin at the beginning especially since everyone knows that The Hobbit comes before The LOTR Trilogy. I would never think of starting to read with The Fellowship of the Ring before I ...

... to read it out loud to us...I was probably 11 or 12 at the time and just couldn't get into it. He also tried to read us The Hobbit. Now I feel bad....should I ask him to read something out loud to me now, or would that just be weird in a Love You Forever way?

I think we'd better stick with The Fellowship of the Rings at this point. We might do The Hobbit after we finish LotR, but I think too many people would be confused if we switched now.

I'm going to jump on the bandwagon with those who want to read The Hobbit first; I recently picked up a boxed set with that and the LotR books and I'd love to read them all together.

I think starting with the The Hobbit is a good idea.

... one another? (Kik, I am thinking of Cat traveling through dryers now. ;) #45 compski & 53 bib: Like bib, I don't own The Hobbit. That sounds interesting, though. If the group were to start with that book, I would go buy a copy. I've only read it once so far. #55 Donna: Do you ...

... Winter's Night a Traveller and I guess Fforde's fiction wouldn't exist without Calvino. I'm *still* getting through The Hobbit - finding it mildly entertaining but not engrossing, and also, meanwhile, been lured into The Watchmen which one of my precocious Year 10s lent me. I've never ...

I'm late catching up on this but I wonder about compski's suggestion about The Hobbit. I don't own it, but I would go buy it. I do own LotR, but they're trapped in a box, so I probably wouldn't be able to join in until I move next month. Also, I know we've discussed watching the extended ...

... of the trilogy starting in September?--So far the 8th is the target date. They are trying to decide whether to begin with The Hobbit or The Fellowship of the Ring. If you are interested, let me know and I'll locate the group for you--I made a post there although I don't belong, so I can ...

... has 10 chapters. Two a week would probably be a good way to go. I hate to add to the decisions, but is starting with The Hobbit not an option? It is a much "friendlier" book. Might be a good warm up. Also, we can do it another time.

... than one had read, leading to massive duplication among the family? If ALL of the members of a family of five have read The Hobbit?

... though :) I'm trying to remember what I read about the Hobbit movies. I think the first movie is going to be taken from The Hobbit book...... so the stuff you mentioned........and the second movie is going to be a bridge from The Hobbit to The Fellowship of the Ring.

... or anybody else's! Have agreed with quite a number of the dislikes mentioned. Here is my take on the subject: Enjoyed The Hobbit loathed LOTR, gave up, too derivative of the Hobbit. Enjoyed David Copperfield can't stand enything else by Dickens. Enjoyed Pride and Prejudice could not ...

... it years ago. This time around we all decided it was probably best read before age 20. I've heard similar things about The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings books -- that if you don't read them when young you may never enjoy them. I have never read them, but I would be interested in ...

>45 You have chosen the best Tolkien in The Hobbit which is full of fasinating characters. The Lord of the Rings is just more of The Hobbit but at boring length. I couldn't finish LOR, but I thought The Hobbit was brilliant.

... them. I think they were appallingly boring, which is rather unacceptable for 800+ pages for each of the eight books. The Hobbit, even amidst my Tolkien adoration, is one of the books that I don't bother rereading when I'm reading the series. All of the other Tolkien fans I know adore it ...

... at good prices on eBay, I've also successfully bid on some limited editions. In this case, it was The Silmarillion, The Hobbit, and The Lord of the Rings. But I've also heard other members get burned on this. Obviously, as the item gets more expensive I get more nervous and look only ...

I just don't get Tolkien. It took me 4 months to read The Hobbit and 6 months to read the first of his The Lord of the Rings trilogy. I was about 2 weeks into the second book of the trilogy when my husband took mercy on me and suggested I give it up. And why did I spend the better part of a ...

Heck,in 2500 years The Hobbit might have moved from genre to holy book with hundreds of Hobbit denominations fighting with each other both physically and theologically.
