Reading Carter Beats the Devil , prety enjoyable historical fiction about a magician in the 1920s.
Also making my way through Pictures at a Revolution, and getting the relevant movies (Bonnie and Clyde, In The Heat of the Night, etc.) through Netflix.

Shadowland by Peter Straub and Carter Beats the Devil are both excellent novels about magic - neither take place in the 19th century, but definitely have "the flavor" you're looking for...

My favourite books this month were Carter Beats the Devil by Glen David Gold and The Messenger by Andrew E. Shipley, both of which were excellent.
