Reading Carter Beats the Devil, prety enjoyable historical fiction about a magician in the 1920s. Also making my way through Pictures at a Revolution, and getting the relevant movies (Bonnie and Clyde, In The Heat of the Night, etc.) through Netflix. Planning on starting The Handmaid's Ta ...

#202: I own Carter Beats the Devil (a book I bough because of the cover, lol) and one of these days I will actually read it. I am on the fence about Firmin. I guess I will just have to track down a copy and see if I like it or not!

106. Carter Beats the Devil by Glen David Gold This book is typical of the books I like. It takes huge liberties with history - the real life magician Carter here is caught up in the death of President Harding and the invention of television by Philo Farnsworth - two events that in reality, he ...

Shadowland by Peter Straub and Carter Beats the Devil are both excellent novels about magic - neither take place in the 19th century, but definitely have "the flavor" you're looking for...

Carter Beats the Devil is a mystery, but involves a stage magician. It takes place in the 1920s.

... of the Darkness by Anne Bishop (if these three do end up on my Best of 2009 list, I'll count 'em as a series instead) Carter Beats the Devil by Glen David Gold

... The Illyrian Adventure by Lloyd Alexander last night. It's cute, but it doesn't really measure up to my last read. Carter Beats the Devil is easily one of the best books I've read this year.

My favourite books this month were Carter Beats the Devil by Glen David Gold and The Messenger by Andrew E. Shipley, both of which were excellent. I also immensely enjoyed The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Bronte. I'm really getting into my classics this year!

Carter Beats the Devil by Glen David Gold, which a friend loaned to me (and I'm very much enjoying). Also listening to an audio book of Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift, but to be honest, I'm finding that rather dull in places. Actually, I'm finding it rather dull in MOST places...
